Caring is at the heart of nursing. Indeed, the very act of connecting with another human being when he or she is in such a vulnerable position is profoundly healing. But to connect fully with humanity in this way, we must first take a look at our own pain.
As nurses, we not only care for patients but for our surroundings as well. We have a deep desire to make things better, which is one of the reasons we went into nursing. Healing is embedded in the fabric of who we are. Nurses don't only heal patients, they attempt to heal the environment as well. But the negativity we absorb by continuously stressing over situations is not helpful to us, our profession, or our patients in the long run. The emotional and moral fatigue we suffer comes with to high a price.
