Program launched to train nurses to care for sexual assault victims

Jefferson Healthcare of Port Townsend, Washington, has launched its Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, which trains select nurses to provide specialized care to sexual assault patients.

Three SANE-trained nurses have been hired and four additional nurses are being trained. SANEs are trained to provide forensic services to sexual assault patients, as well as psycho-social and medical care. Practice policies and procedures were developed in accordance with Washington state and national guidelines to ensure that the work of SANEs stands up in court.

Prior to the launch if the SANE program, sexual assault victims in the area would have to travel at least an hour by car to another facility if they sought out forensic services.
